Oxford Academia at Yale offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in life at a world-renowned Ivy League campus. Each day features a combination of seminars, hands-on activities and workshops, lab time, guest speakers, community meeting, and unstructured time for socializing, exploration, and reflection.

Students choose a major seminar and a minor seminar, and dive deep into their academic subjects. Major seminars meet six days a week for three hours and Minor seminars meet three days a week for two hours. Begin with classroom discussions that frame your seminar concepts and identify key issues. Then take the learning beyond the classroom with site visits, meetings with experts, and guest lectures from distinguished academics and renowned scholars.

Seminar groups have the option to leave the campus for day trips and fieldwork at nearby museums, historical sites, and guest expert locations to find further inspiration and utilize all the region has to offer.

Afternoons and evenings offer the opportunity to explore New Haven and the surrounding areas. Steeped in history and culture, New Haven is home to renowned museums such as the Peabody Museum of Natural History, Eli Whitney Museum, Yale Center for British Art, and the Beinecke Rare Book Library. Yale is home to the second-largest gym in the world, with numerous activity spaces for yoga classes, squash, basketball, and tennis courts, an indoor pool, and weight room facilities.

Faculty and staff-led workshops in Creative Writing, Art History & Sketching, College Essay Writing, and more allow you to continue your guided learning outside of the academic hours and explore additional areas of interest.

On the weekend, either with your seminar groups or on staff-led excursions, students have the opportunity to further explore New Haven, venture to nearby hiking trails, or visit New York City on a day trip. Visit the Empire State Building, see the Statue of Liberty, stroll down Wall Street, or relax in Central Park.

Henk Rossouw, Poet
Henk Rossouw's debut Xamissa won the Poetic Justice Institute Editor's Prize. The African Poetry Book Fund included his chapbook The Water Archives in the 2018 box set New-Generation African Poets. His poems have been published in POETRY, The Paris Review, The Massachusetts Review, Poetry Northwest, World Literature Today, and Boston Review, among other places. He is an editor for Tupelo Quarterly and a consulting editor for the African Poetry Book Series at the University of Nebraska Press. An Associate Professor, Henk co-directs the Creative Writing Program at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Governor Peter Shumlin
Governor Shumlin served three terms as the 81st governor of the state of Vermont. During his time in office, he established Vermont as a leader on progressive policies, making the state the first to guarantee universal Pre-K education, pass a mandatory GMO labeling law, and achieve near universal health care coverage, as well as enacting a number of laws to boost renewable energy production and combat climate change. A committed entrepreneur, Shumlin served as the director of Putney Student Travel and currently is a partner in several real estate companies in Southeast Vermont. He has also served as a visiting fellow at Havard’s Kennedy School of Government and has taught at Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health as the Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow.

Get an insider’s look into college life at Yale through a tour led by a current undergraduate student. Visit dormitory quads, classrooms, lecture halls, and student centers to gain understanding of both the academic and social side of life as a “Yalie.” Evening workshops led by Oxford Academia staff and faculty focus on topics such as curating a college list, tips for the application process, and college essay writing workshops. Students who have begun writing their college entrance essays are encouraged to bring them along for review and revision.

Oxford Academia at Yale programs are based at the heart of Yale’s New Haven campus, allowing participants the opportunity to experience an authentic introduction to life in college. Students and residential faculty and staff stay in double suite-style rooms with bathrooms on the hall. The dormitory boasts numerous common spaces, game rooms, libraries, and study spaces where students can relax with friends or recharge in between activities. Dormitory entrances open onto enclosed green quads, perfect for relaxing on the grass or tossing a frisbee after lunch. Faculty and staff members live in residence halls with students throughout the program. Students enjoy breakfasts and dinners at their dorm cafeteria. Lunches are a combination of restaurants in the city and picnics in nearby parks and greens.

Students are responsible for arranging travel to and from the program. For students arriving at and departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport or Bradley International Airport during the designated arrival window, Oxford Academia will arrange group transportation to/from the Yale University campus. This fee is $65 each way.
