Pathology, the scientific study of disease, delves into the causes, effects, and structural changes associated with various ailments. This seminar adopts a comprehensive approach to tumors, defined as abnormal masses resulting from disordered growth. Exploring the progressive, purposeless, and parasitic nature of tumors across different human body systems is a key focus. Throughout the course, students examine benign and malignant tumors across various body systems, enhancing their understanding of disease processes crucial for accurate recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. They analyze gross and histological features of different neoplasms in diverse body systems and engage with video-recordings of post-mortem examinations, illuminating various cancer types. Furthermore, students gain practical experience with ultrasound machines, highlighting methodologies for cancer detection.

Led by a practicing doctor or professor of medicine, this seminar introduces students to every aspect of medicine, from the science prerequisites in the pre-med major, to the systems of the body and how they correlate to the various specializations in medicine, to career paths in clinical practice and research, to the latest developments in medical research today. Topics included in this seminar bring attention to such diseases as cancer, diabetes, obesity, HIV, and COVID-19. Meet with researchers and medical practitioners to gain a better sense of the challenges doctors face today and how the practice of medicine continues to evolve.

On the Yale program, students in the Pre-Med seminar will have the opportunity to practice dissection. There is a supplemental fee of $100 for this major and $50 for this minor.

The principles of psychology permeate our lives every day, often in ways we don’t realize. How do we decide what to do? How much of who you are is determined by your family, your gender identity, or your friends? Understanding human cognition, emotions, and behavior allows psychologists to better predict how we may behave in specific situations, why we think the way we do, and how emotions impact our interactions with our world. Begin by learning the basic goals of psychology, then examine theories that attempt to explain the many aspects of personality and behavior. Observe and describe human behavior, attempt to explain why specific behaviors occur, predict what may happen in the future, explore ways to control future behaviors, and work to turn negative behaviors into positive actions. While psychology is not an absolute science, there are ways to research, experiment, and categorize behaviors in order to better understand the signs and symptoms of psychological disorders, and the impacts individuals have on society. Explore concepts through the lens of behavioral, trait, and multicultural theories and relate them to your own experiences. Learn how biology and psychology intersect to create unique individuals. Through readings, discussions, films, experiments, and activities, explore the basic foundation of psychology and evaluate your own decisions from a new perspective.
